Cowley co, S/O Fargus "Frank" Ray and Flossie Thompson Bonnesen. As a
child, he lived in Guymon, Okla., Holly and Burlington, Colo., and later
Nickerson, where he finished his education.
On Dec. 30, 1941, he married Vernie Williams
in Hutchinson. The couple made their first home in Nickerson. A veteran
of World War II, he proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy, serving
on the USS Arkansas. His extensive military career included the European
Theater, the Pacific Theater, D-Day invasion of 1944, Bombardment of
Cerborg, the invasion of Southern France, Battle of Iwa Jima and Okinawa
and the Liberation of the Philippines. His service time took him to
Italy, North Africa, Algiers, Casablanca, Monoca, Sicily, Ireland,
Scotland and England. Following his honorable discharge in October of
1945, he returned to Hutchinson. In 1952, the couple moved to Wichita,
and he began employment with KG&E as a journeyman mechanic. He later
became a mechanical foreman at the Murray Gill Plant in Wichita,
retiring in 1985. The couple had resided at the Kansas Veterans Home in
Winfield since 2003. He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars No.
3544, Winfield, and the DAV and USS Arkansas Association. His hobbies
included his family, traveling, fishing, hunting and photography. He
was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Emery Bonnesen; a
daughter-in-law, Georgia Bonnesen; and a granddaughter, Rebecca Bonnesen.
