Old 16th Section Cemetery

(fka Stuart Family Cemetery)

Hempstead County, Arkansas

Submitted August 31, 2007, by Robert Suart

The Old 16th Section Cemetery was originally located on the old military road that ran from Columbus to Washington and Fulton.  It was formerly the Stuart Family Cemetery but is also known as the 16th section cemetery located two miles east of Columbus on Hwy 73W.  It is on a farm not protected by any fence.  The graveyard is on a hill overgrown with brush and trees.  There are other graves that are unmarked, few markers remain, many graves which are slaves.   Two of the notable graves in the cemetery are that of Abraham Stuart and his wife Mary (Kuykendall), with his mother Sarah Elizabeth (Fulkerson) wife of John Stuart buried near by.  The grave markers for Abraham & Mary were carved from a large slab of bois d’arc tree in the shape of violins.  They were still visible in the year 2006.
